RIP CD??!

Published by astrozombie at 6:13 am under free music Edit This

Gosh! And to end the week of free music, I give you two bands and a whole bundle of punk rock foolery.
First is Bomb the Music Industry! – four album worth on their site. The last two are great – it’s some sort of mix between pop punk, hardcore, ska and a mighty powerful synth.

Second:
Definace, Ohio – these folk punkers have always given when all their music: fair play to them, I think it’s great. My favourite track is ‘Tanks! Tanks! Tanks’ on the Ghost Mice split.

Folk punk legends, The Levellers, are also releasing a free single on June 2nd - www.lettersfromtheunderground.com

What’s interesting about all the bands featured this week? From Nine Inch Nails; The Offspring; Bomb The Music Industry; Defiance, Ohio; even Bridge9 Records?

They’re still producing physical formats – you can still get the CD. Packaging still holds sway and people - a significant number of people - still want a physical format. It is not the end, and we may just see CDs do a ‘vinyl’.

Ruth Booth, editor of rockmidgets.com, said to me, recently – “I like holding stuff in my hand. I never buy MP3s, I only use free ones as a sample. A really nice packaged piece of work (Radiohead - Amnesiac, Tool - 10,000 Days, etc) makes you feel like you’ve got something special.”

1’s and 0’s do not have a value, and I don’t understand paying for 1’s and 0’s without a physical format to carry them on.

Maybe Apple is onto something with buying a music subscription with their iPods. It’s certainly a more attractive alternative to having adverts on either end of a song. Either way, I don’t think this is the end of the physical music for a long time to come – mainstream media pays too much attention to the major record companies and not enough to bands, musicians, producers and listeners. This ends up not giving an accurate representation of what’s happening, because together, independents represent a large share of the market.
