[album] Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

Published by astrozombie under Album Review Edit This

Sorry, no freebee today. But, I do have a recommendation:

Album of the Week

Dan Le Sac vs The Scroobius Pip - Angels

After coming to note with their 2007 single, ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’, beats master Dan Le Sac and lyricist Scroobius Pip became quite the sensation. An inventive UK hiphop act with a new beat - not a Dizzle Rascal garage hiphop way or a bland The Streets copy, but something that’s different and unique. And, what’s more, they referenced rock’n’roll bands! So, they got a lot of rock’n’roll kids on board with that.

Dan le Sec vs The Scroobius Pip - Thou Shalt Always Kill

Their album, Angels, is release today (12th May): a twelve track expansion of that ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ sound – intelligent, playful backings to the Pips philosophical, thoughtful, story telling raps.

Dan Le Sac’s beats revel in damaged CD skipping sounds that make ingenious, unique groves are complimented perfectly with the bearded Pip’s challenging lyricism: from the opening mission statement against modern mainstream society; to ‘Magician’s Assistant’, a challenging song about the selfishness of suicide; to the Radiohead ‘Planet Telex’ sample skipping ‘Letter From God To Man’, which is an imagined leather to God.

It’s a decent album, but by no means is every song a hit. It’s got a weird optimistic tone, despite some elements of raving against things and heart break. I’m not sure it’s worth buying – it does loose a bit of its punch in the middle – but it makes it up at the end and songs like ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ and ‘The Beat That My Heart Skipped’ are amongst the best modern day hiphop out there.
